At the international conference DFRWS EU 2023, Jan Gruber, Christopher Hargreaves, and Felix Freiling received the Best Student Paper Award for their article titled Contamination of digital evidence: Understanding an underexposed risk. The paper deals with the dangers of contamination when handling digital evidence and proposes a common definition to grasp both physical and digital contamination. With the intent to improve the understanding, Gruber et al. discuss several examples, counterexamples and edge cases of digital evidence contamination and shed light on this underexposed phenomenon in the digital sphere. The work has been presented in Bonn and can be found in the conference proceedings published as a special issue of the journal Forensic Science International: Digital Investigation.
